Born in Baghdad, Iraq, she studied at the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and at the University of Baghdad in Iraq. She received a graduate degree in printmaking from Wimbledon School of Art in London and another degree in printmaking from the Central School of Art and Design in London.
Al-Attar was the first Iraqi woman artist to have a solo exhibition in Baghdad. She has received awards from many international biennials, including those in Cairo, Brazil, London, Madrid, and Poland. Her work is in museum collections internationally.
Her selected solo exhibitions include: Europa Galleries, Los Angeles, 1990; Alif Gallery, Washington, 1985; Annexe Gallery, London, 1981; Centre d'Accueil du Proche Orient, Paris, 1974; National Museum of Modern Art, Baghdad, Iraq, 1973; and Al-Wasiti Gallery, Baghdad, Iraq, 1965.
