Aleem was born in Alexandria, Egypt. She received her B.A. and M.F.A. from the University of Southern California and her Ph.D. in fine arts from the University of Helwan in Egypt. She also studied fine arts at the Pratt Institute in New York. In 1968 Aleem became a professor at the Department of Printed Design in the Faculty of Fine Arts, Alexandria. She was appointed director of the faculty in 1981.
She has had solo exhibitions in the United States, Lebanon, Egypt, Germany, Italy, and Norway. Her list of group exhibitions is extensive, including places such as: France, Luxembourg, India, China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Iraq, Kuwait, Yemen, Egypt, Yugoslavia, Japan, Brazil, Norway, Poland, East Germany, Russia, and Finland.
Her prizes and awards include: Graphics arts prize at the Graphics Biennial in Norway, 1987 and 1989; First Prize, Biennial Norwegian Festival, 1984; International Year of the Woman award from Egypt and Italy, 1975; the National Order for Art and Science of the First Degree from Egypt, 1974; First Prize, Biennial Norwegian Festival, 1954; and National Award from Egypt, 1973.
