Asato received her Shodan Degree in Japanese Calligraphy from Kyoto Suimei Shodo Kai, Japan in 1980; her Certificate in Japanese Language, Art and Culture from Kansai University of Foreign Studies, Osaka, Japan in 1980; and her BA, Cum Laude, in Fine Arts and East Asian Studies from Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minnesota in 1982. She is a freelance illustrator and arts instructor in Japan.
