Burko received her BS in Art from Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, New York and her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. After Graduate school she located in Pennsylvania. Most recently she was a professor at the Community College of Philadelphia and has been a visiting professor at Princeton University as well as a visiting artist and critic at many colleges and universities across the US and France.

Burko was awarded a Residency at the Bellagio Study and Conference Center in Italy by the Rockefeller Foundation, 1993. The Reader's Digest Lila Acheson Wallace Fund honored her with a six-month residency in Giverny, France. She also received a National Endowment for the Arts Grant, 1991-'92.
