Cantrell received her BA in History and Studio Art from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia in 1988. Currently she is an MFA candidate in Photography and Electronic Media Arts at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Colorado.
Since 1992, Cantrell has been a Continuing Education Instructor in photography at the University of Colorado. She is also the curator of the Workspace Art Gallery at the university and Imag Gallery in Boulder. In 1994 she received a J. William Fulbright Award: a research grant for ten months of fully funded study in the Republic of Korea.
