Carilli's work is an investigation into life. She uses color and materials to explore sensuousness, bleakness; dynamic stasis; flux, history; being, not being; and essence.

The methods and materials employed by Carilli range from painting to installation. She has recently been investigating her matrilineal Irish heritage through multimedia installations of photography, poetry, and found object sculpture.

She earned an MFA from the University of Wisconsin, holds the office of Western Regional Vice President of the Women's Caucus for Art, and lectures and exhibits her artwork regionally and nationally.
