Frances Charteris uses photography, video, and writing (poetry and fictional autobiography) to investigate the community and its representation, through interviews and portraiture of individuals.

She has exhibited throughout the United States and currently teaches "Writing in the Visual Arts" and video at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Charteris is a recipient of a Westaf Fellowship in photography, 1993 and several local grants from the Boulder Arts Commission and The Arts and Humanities Association of Boulder, 1995 and 1996.
