Chorbachi was born in Bagdad, Iraq. She studied in Beirut, Lebanon and Florence, Italy, and earned a Ph.D. in the history of Islamic art from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Currently, she is a Professor at both Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge.

Her solo exhibitions have been in: Beirut, Lebanon, 1966, 68, and 70; Florence, Italy, 1967; Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, 1976; Jedda, Saudi Arabia, 1981; Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1983; London, England, 1984 and 85; and Al-Khubar, Saudi Arabia, 1990. Chorbachi has also had her work included in many group exhibitions.
