Duckworth was born in Hamburg, Germany. She studied drawing, painting, and sculpture at Liverpool School of Art, England; and ceramics at Hammersmith School of Art, England. Then she attended the Central School of Arts & Crafts, London. In 1982 she received an Honorary Doctorate Degree from DePaul University, Chicago, Illinois.
