Elmahdi received her Bachelor of Fine Art degree from the College of Fine & Applied Art, Sudan University for Science & Technology, Khartoum, Sudan, 1992. In 1995, she produced illustrations, design, and layout for books and posters relating to educational materials concerning medicine for children and the illiterate. She is a member of the "Sudanese Women Artists Association" and the "Sudanese Artists Union."

Her selected group exhibitions include: Grand Holiday Villa, Khartoum, Sudan, 1999 and 2000; Faculty of Medicine(75th anniversary), Khartoum University, Khartoum, 1998; and Amll Society for Homeless Children, Khartoum, 1993.
