Mary S. Gray was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1936. She is a mature black, Irish and Native American female graduate student attending Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona.

This image, Story Teller, is a preliminary litho drawing of The Neighborhood Story Teller from Gray's MFA thesis exhibition titled, The Grandma Series. The exhibition focuses on the relationship between her grandmothers and herself, extending through fifty years, and is meant to stimulate memories and imagination in the viewers.
