Gunnarsdóttir was born in Reykjavík, Iceland. She attended the Iclandic College of Arts and Crafts as an undergraduate student. Then she received her BFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 1990. Presently, she is a full time student of Philosophy at the University of Iceland.

Her selected solo exhibitions include: Golden Beanstock, sculpture/installation at the top of a rehearsal-tower for the Fire Department of Reykjavík, Iceland, 1993; Fluids, video prints, Living Art Museum, Reykjavík, 1993; and Earth Nurtures, sculpture/installation, Municipal Museum of Reykjavík, 1992.

Her selected group exhibitions include: Gnaegtarbrunnurinn, video festival, Reykjavík, 1995; Extract, Gallerí II, Reykjavík, 1994; P-Art, sculpture/installation, underground parking lot, Reykjavík, 1994; Cornucopia, video festival, Solon Islandus, Reykjavík, 1994; and The Real Post Other, sculpture/installation, 1545 Wilcox, Hollywood, California, 1992.
