The World's Women On-Line!

Gustowska was born in Poznan. She studied at The Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan. Presently, Gustowska is a Professor of this Academy. From 1972 to 1992 she ran the ON Gallery in Poznan and co-operated it from 1992 to 1994. Her works are in the fields of graphic art, painting, video-installation, and video-performance. Gustowska's 1995 video-installation, Odbicia, is described by Alicja Kepinska: "Transparence, light, the water's green depths, mirror reflections, silence, the spectral fabric of phenomena, time spun out of joint -- all make up the stuff of Izabella Gustowska's Floating series. The artist acknowledges her desire to transcend the physical aspects of water -- its volume, density, colour, sound -- and attain the metaphysical. Water as an element is rife with symbolism harking back to the Bible and rites of all cultures, found in literature and poetry, in colloquial speech, proverbs and parables, in everything which mirrors life and is life. Thus perceived, water corresponds to our destiny."

Her selected solo exhibitions include: La Source, Galerie Du Frac, Chateaugiron, Rennes, France, 1997; Floating, The Zacheta Gallery of Contemporary Art, Jarslaja, Poland, 1996; Odbicia II, Galeria Sztuki Wspótczesnej, Sandomierz, Poland, 1995; Izabella Gustowska, Sny, "Arsenal", Galeria Miejska, Poznan, Poland, 1994; Aterspegling, (with K.
