Hankin was born in Boston, Massachusetts and later immigrated to Canada. She obtained Canadian Citizenship in 1975. She earned her BA in Visual Arts, with honors, from Brock University, Ontario, Canada in 1991. She has won awards and grants, and had a residency at the Fuente Studio in Competa, Spain in 1994.
