Himid was born in Zanzibar, Tanzania, Africa. She received her BA in Theatre Design from Wimbledon School of Art, London, England in 1976 and her MA in Cultural History from the Royal College of Art, London, England in 1984. Presently, she is doing Doctoral Research in Art History at the University of East Anglia. Himid has been Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston, England since 1990.
