"Sheelas" (Irish language: Sila-na-gig) are stone carvings from pre-Christianized Ireland, closely tied to fertility and protection.
Through the Sheela series of self-portraits, Hoffmann defines her cultural connection / alienation to her ethnic background, a heritage which cannot be fully realized.
Hoffmann explores evolution of the self through generative growth images, reflecting on the discomfort and fear which accompanies change.
