James received her B.A. in Painting from St. Martin's School of Art, after taking the Foundation Course at Loughborough College of Art. Her work has won her many awards including: the BBC Wales Visual Art Award, 1994; Second Prize, BP National Portrait Award, 1994; First Prize, Hunting/Observer Art Prizes, 1993; Welsh Arts Council Travel Award to Tuscany and Umbria, 1992-'93; Gold Medal for Fine Art, Royal National Eisteddfod, 1992; First Prize, Mostyn Open, Oriel Mostyn, Llandudno, 1991; and First Prize, Wales Open, Aberystwyth Arts Centre, 1989. She is represented in many public collections such as the National Museum, Cardiff; the Museum of Modern Art Wales, Machynlleth; the Arts Council of England; and the Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow.
