Karnouk was born in Cairo, Egypt. She received a degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome in 1966. She did postgraduate work in communications at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada and received a master's degree in art education from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada in 1982. Karnouk has been the recipient of several grants and awards, among them a Ford Foundation grant for 1982 through 1985. Her work is in several museum collections.
