Kawash was born in Baghdad, Iraq. She received a degree in design from the Manchester College of Art in 1966. Her recent work is characterized by an interest in Arabic calligraphy. She is one of Iraq's most distinguished artists.

Her selected solo exhibitions include: Hilton Hotel, Athens, Greece, 1985; Birmingham Public Library, Atlanta, Georgia, 1984 - 1986; the Kennedy Center, Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah; Cupples House Art Gallery, St, Louis University, Saint Louis, Missouri; Through Arab Eyes (traveling exhibition), Milwaukee Library, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Sheraton Hotel, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, 1982; and Hilton Hotel, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, 1978.
