Kren was born in Houston, Texas but spent most of her life in the Midwest. She received her BS from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1966 and her MFA from the University of Iowa, Iowa City in 1979. She is now a Professor of Art at Kansas University, Manhatton, Kansas.

Kren received an N.E.A. grant in 1982, attended Yaddo in 1989, received the Kansas State University's Distinguished Graduate Faculty Member Award in 1989, and her work is included in various public and private collections.
