Lydiat received her BA with First Class Honours from Sheffield City Polytechnic in 1981 and her MA in Fine Art with Distinction from Manchester Polytechnic in 1982. She was awarded a Henry Moore Fellowship at Birmingham Polytechnic, 1985-'87. Currently she is Senior Lecturer of Fine Art in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at The Nottingham Trent University.

She works in photography, sculpture, and mixed media installation based on autobiography. Her work is published in two monographs: Waiting for the Seventh Wave and Anne Lydiat 1990-96.
