An Italian American born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mäat began using her first camera, a Diana, at age twelve. She is heavily influenced by female photographers, especially in portraiture, such as Dorothea Lange and Annie Leibowitz.
Mäat is a traditional photographer preferring black and white imagery with no gadgets nor computer generated images. Her approach is to shoot, develop, and print. She has taught photography with noted Farm Security Administration photographer, John Collier, Jr.
Her artistic philosophy is, "Take responsibility for the world around you, visually communicate, and make pictures which come from your heart!"
