Akiko Maeda was born in Osaka, Japan. She graduated from Kyoto City University of Art. She went on to complete the Ceramics Course of Kyoto City Industrial Laboratory. Her work has won awards including: Fletcher Challenge Ceramics Award 1996, New Zealand; 22nd Choza Ceramic Award, Tokoname, Japan, 1995; '91 Asahi Modern Craft Award, Japan; and '90 Asahi Modern Craft Award, Japan.

Her selected solo exhibitions include: Gallery HAKU, Osaka, 1991-'97; Gallery YTSUWA-KAN, Kyoto, 1996; and Galeria Ceramica, Tokyo, 1995.
