Born in Algeria, Mahieddine is a completely self-taught artist. Although she was adopted at five-years-of-age by a French couple living in Algeria, she never learned to read and write. At the age of sixteen she had an exhibition in France which brought her to the attention of André Breton and Pablo Picasso. Her preferred medium is gouache on paper. She lives in Blida, Algeria where she continues to paint actively; and has rarely exhibited her work outside of France and her native land.
Her selected exhibitions include: Forces of Change: Artists of the Arab World, The National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC, 1994; Bonjour Picasso, Musée Picasso, Antibes, France, 1988; Centre Culturel France, Algiers, Algeria; and Galeria Adrien Maeght, Paris, 1947.
