Malani was born in Karachi, India. From 1964 to '67 she worked in a studio at Bhulabhai Memorial Institute where Bombay artists, musicians, and performing artists worked together as a community. Malani received her Diploma in Fine Arts from Sir J. J. School of Art, Bombay in 1969.
