Born in North Ireland, McClure completed a foundation course in art and design at the University of Ulster at Belfast in 1980. In 1984, she was awarded a first-class honors degree in ceramic sculpture with special commendation of work in related studies from The Hornsey College of Art in London.
Since 1986. McClure has been living and working in Kyoto making relief and three-dimensional works which combine Japanese paper-making fibers (kozo, gampi, miksumata) with other materials, often clay.
She has worked as an exhibitions organizer, a member of the editorial panel of CIRCA art magazine, an assistant editor of the Kyoto Visitor's Guide, and more recently as an interpreter and translator.
