Jazz Morgan grew up in New York City, where she received formal art training at the State University of New York. She now maintains her studio, Light the Dangerous Spirit, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Morgan's painting style and ideas are highly personal and unique. She begins each painting with layers of translucent oil stain and progresses to a gestural drawing style containing raw markings and explosive bold areas. Fragments of representational elements are combined with abstract calligraphic areas allowing images to refuse to establish only one defined relationship. The juxtapositioning of these elements creates a compelling field for transportation and spontaneity.
Her selected solo exhibitions include: Card Shark Center, St. Joseph, Missouri, 1995; Molloys Gallery, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 1994; Albuquerque City Community Center, New Mexico, 1994; Exit Gallery, Flagstaff, Arizona, 1993 and '84; Carnegie Center, Leavenworth, Kansas, 1992; Quaker State Center, Flagstaff, 1991; Espress Center, Flagstaff, 1990; Winter Sun Gallery, Flagstaff, 1989; and Fifth Avenue Gallery, New York, 1986, '79, and '75.
