Schoonover states, "My feelings, experiences, and ideologies are filtered through my art, which is based in fiber and textiles in combination with different techniques and materials, showing my interest in varying textures and the tensions and contradictions created by those variations."

Her interest in the goddess religions and feminism are also addressed in her work with "universal" symbols and her own interpretations of goddess / feminist ideologies and iconography.

In October, 1995, Schoonover was one of ten artists chosen from a group of 49, who received an Award of Excellence at the Art in St. Louis XI exhibition.
