Sharkey loves the elemental and the essential, which is why she is an abstract painter; she strives to convey at once the simple and the mysterious. She captures an inner presence of life: a radiance; a celebration of being.
Her selected solo exhibitions include: What's Afoot Gallery, Casper, California, 1992 and '93; Winona Gallery, Mendocino Art Center, Mendocino, California, 1990; Berge und Volken um Meran, Amerika Haus Munchen, Munich, Germany, 1979; Tanglewood Gallery, New York, 1979; Art Workers' Guild Gallery, Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, 1977; and Painted Images: Virginia Sharkey '67, College Center Main Gallery, Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, New York, 1976.
