Sukkarieh was born in Baalbek, Lebanon. She received a bachelor's degree from the Fine Arts Institute in Beirut, Lebanon in 1984. Continuing her studies in the United States, Sukkarieh settled in California, where she studied Communication Arts and Literature at Mills College in Oakland and at Lutheran University. In 1989, she received a master's degree from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.
