Van Kerckhoven, a Belgian artist living in Antwerp, Belgium, has been working in new media and computer imaging for over ten years. In the eighties, she was Artist in Residence at the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence in Brussels, Free University where she created videotapes of computer drawings concerning the latest evolution in brain / moral research. Later Van Kerckhoven produced video installations including several computer-aided and computer-based works. The main tape is based on excerpts from an exposé on knowledge representation versus ill faces out of an 80 year old Viennese medical book on diagnostics of heart disease by looking at the colored spots on people's faces. Her most recent video series deals with women: the way they appear in magazines, the way they show themselves, and the way one can interpret this from a very positive, uplifting point of view.
