Lois Williams was born in Denbigh, North Wales. She received her education from Wrexham Technical College; Manchester Polytechnic; and the University of London, Goldsmiths College. She lives and works in North Wales and Sheffield. Michael Tooby, Curator of the Tate Gallery, St. Ives, states, "Alphabet is an example of the numerous occasions when Williams has used the image of the box where special things are kept: the trunk found in the attic; the cupboard of keepsakes; the bottom drawer; the family chest. These are private places where, inside, particularly special, even secret things, are being revealed. A private code of signs is employed to denote memories of family life, which, by implication become tokens of the spirit of the Welsh farming background she grew up in. "
