Williamson lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa. She has shown her work in many different countries, carried out projects in Austria and Holland, and exhibited in Biennales in Venice, Havana, and Sydney, Australia.

Her work, which can range from very small pieces to large installations involving constructed elements, sound, and lighting, often has a narrative quality and generally concerns issues of contemporary South African history.

Williamson also writes about art. Her first book was titled Resistance Art in South Africa and was published in the United States. Her second book titled Art in South Africa: the Future Present, about the art of the nineties, was published in late 1996.
