Yampolsky, whose nationality is Mexican, received her Bachelor of Arts in the Humanities from the University of Chicago, and Escuela de Pintura y Escultura, Mexico City. Before becoming a photographer, she worked as an engraver in the Taller de Gráfica Popular (T.G.P.), the Workshop of Popular Graphic Art, formed in Mexico by artists dedicated to the production and promotion of art for the masses. Yampolsky also curated exhibitions of the T.G.P.'s works shown throughout Mexico, the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
