Zirbes received her BA in Fine Arts from DePauw University, Indiana and her MA in Ceramics and Art History from The Ohio State University. She also studied at San Jose State College, California and Kyoto City College of Fine Arts, Japan. Currently, she is a Professor in the School of Art and Design at The University of Michigan. Her recent artwork has been influenced by a collaborative process resulting from her participation in international workshops / residencies / symposia, where a group of artists live and work together for a period of approximately one month. Her newer images are moving from single standing vessels in space towards the relationship of vessels within a tenuously balanced reality, because as Zirbes states, "I know that I experience an ongoing tension as I seek to maintain a fragile balance of my psychological and physical realities."

Her work is in many permanent public collections including: Museum Collection of the Agency of Czech Ceramic Design, Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic; Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, Honolulu; International Ceramics Collection of the Schloss Glucksburg, Romhild, Germany; International Ceramic Symposium Collection, Bad Laasphe, Germany; Pushkin Museum, Moscow; Museum of Art, Riga, Latvia; International Experimental Ceramics Studio, Kecskemet, Hungary; Museum of Decorative Arts, Prague, Czechoslovakia; and Museum of the Mukhina School, Leningrad School of Higher Learning in Art and Design, USSR.

Her selected exhibitions include: 10 Outstanding Women Ceramists, The Foster Gallery, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 1996; 3rd International Exhibition of Ceramics, State Castle Museum, Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic, 1996; Out of Solitude, Michigan Gallery, Detroit, 1996; Three Return, Emison Art Center, DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana, 1995; East-West Ceramics Collaboration Exhibition, Main Gallery, Department of Art, University of Hawaii, Honolulu, 1995; One Person Exhibition, Exhibit Gallery, Madonna University, Livonia, Michigan, 1995; Vessels and Sculptures, Romhild International Ceramic Symposium Exhibition, Bernau City Galerie and Kunst und Form Watertower Galerie, Berlin, Germany, 1994; American Ceramics, Art Museum, Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, Arizona, 1993; NCECA 93 Clay National, San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego, California, 1993; and International Ceramic Symposium Exhibition, Hall of Ceramic Industry, Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, Shigaraki, Japan, 1992.
